Founder and Head
John Butt is one of the most experienced and well-known Pashto broadcasters. Like many journalists from the Pashtoon parts, he first became familiar with journalism in the 1980s, in the Peshawar newspaper The Frontier Post. From there, he went on to be a stalwart of the BBC Pashto service. While still working with the BBC Pashto service, he was appointed to set up the BBC Afghan Education Drama. This outfit became responsible for the epoch-making radio drama New Home, New Life.
After New Home, New Life, John Butt set up a number of radio dramas, in various parts of the world. These radio dramas caused him to change the focus of his journalism, from news stories to something more like ‘storytelling with a message’, seeking ‘traditional solutions to modern problems’. This became the hallmark, not only of Da Pulay Poray drama, but also of the reports associated with the radio drama.
